-Playing with all my friends outside.
-I liked that we played train track with the omnikin. 
-Doing Calendario
-The story called Andrew's Loose Tooth.
-I like the english game center

 Hola!

Today we drew and labeled partes del cuerpo. In math we learned 6 ways to make 5 with addition and we played "a-di-ccion". In gym we learned how to pass basketballs and we learned a new game called gatos y ratones. In music we got to play on xylophones. After lunch we read a book called Big Bear Little Bear and wrote about our favorite parts. Then we wrote this message together.

 Notes from the Music Room

 

As you can see we have chosen a different way to communicate with you so that more of you have access to this information.

 

First order of business is to inform you that we will have Calgary Opera come to our school and do their School Tour performance of Cinderella.  This opera has been modified using aspects of the opera Cendrillon by Massenet and Rossini’s Cenerentola.  Basically, what that means is that it will be a very lovely performance based on the beloved fairy tale with beautiful music.

The company will come to our school on February 27^th at 2:00 pm.  This is a student only show.

 

Kindergarten kids are learning a song/game about a mouse:

El ratoncito hace “squeak, squeak, squeak.”

Yo no lo veo “peak, peak, peak.”

Ahi esta. El viene aca.

Un, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco y ya!

 

The Grade 1s are working on a song with separate base xylophone and alto parts. 

La ardilla corre, corre, corre.

La ardilla corre, corre rapido.

 

The Grade 2s are learning a song from Puerto Rico calle Vamos a la Mar.

This is a complicated musical piece with more intricate base, alto and soprano xylophone parts, in addition to bongos.

En sarten de palo.

Vamos a la mar,

A comer pescado.

Boca colorada,

En sarten de palo.

 

The Grade 3s have been preparing a song since last term. El Barreño, which is a song from Guatemala.

De los caballitos que me trajo usted,

Ninguno me gusta solo el que monte.

Hagase pa ca, agase pa lla,

Que mi caballito lo atropellara.

Por ahi viene el lecherito,

Con su cantaro de plata.

Y la niña le responde,

« Esa leche a mi me mata »

The Grade 4s are working diligently on their ukulele technique and learning the necessary chords to play the song Al Tambor which is a folk song from Panama.

The Grade 5s were introduced to the ukulele last year.  This year they are continuing to work on their skills adding singing and playing at the same time.  They will be learning a beautiful Chilean song which the Grade 3s sang for our Remembrance Day Assembly, however, this time they will be adding their own accompaniment to it.

Dalhousie School Updates

This is the time of year when we begin planning next school year’s organization, especially in terms of our enrollment and student population projections. Please indicate whether or not you anticipate that your child/ren will attend Dalhousie School again next year. We realize that plans may change over time and would ask you to kindly let the office know in these cases, so that we may staff with accurate numbers. If you have more than one child at Dalhousie, please fill out one form for each child currently Kindergarten to Grade 4. Families do not need to do anything to continue their child’s registration at Dalhousie as it for automatically rolls over for the next year for existing Dalhousie Kindergarten to Grade 4 students, assuming that they are not out of area, unless we hear from the family that their child will be attending elsewhere. 

Similarly, if you have a child in Grade 5, please indicate whether your child will be continuing on to Senator Patrick Burns or attending another school next year. Again, we realize that plans may change over time and would ask you to kindly let the office know in these cases, so that we have accurate numbers. Please complete this form by January 27, 2023. Grade 5 Dalhousie students will be designated to Senator Patrick Burns, unless we hear otherwise from families.  If your child is continuing on to SPB, you do not need to do anything. 

In all cases, if you have any questions about registration at any level, please call the office, who will be happy to help you.

A reminder that we are a nut and allergy aware school, so no nuts or products containing nuts should be brought to school.  Additionally, due to dietary/medical restrictions and preferences, students are not permitted to share or trade food at any time.  In the same vein, we ask that no food or toys be sent to school for birthdays or other celebrations.  There may be occasion for a class celebration in relation to learning, during which the teacher may ask for healthy and food specific donations.

Volunteers need to have police clearance to volunteer for fun lunch, please email dalhousieschoolparentsociety@gmail.com if you would like us to confirm. Don’t forget to send students with reusable straws if they have ordered Booster Juice! If they show a fun lunch volunteer they will be entered to win a free Subway fun lunch on March 21.  If your child will be absent and you‘ve already ordered fun lunch please email dalhousieschoolparentsociety@gmail.com before 11:00am and let us know if you’d like to:
-Pick up the order from the office after 12:30pm
-Donate it to the amazing Dalhousie staff
-Have it sent home with a sibling

 Hola!

Today we had a good day. In calendario we got to sing Spanish songs. In math we played a new math game called "Adiccion" (addition). Before lunch we read "My Mouth Is a Volcano", and after lunch we read "Waiting is Not Easy". Then we wrote about our favorite winter activity. During Social Studies we worked on "What makes my city unique" on our City posters. At the end of the day we wrote this message together.

Hola!

Spanish: We continued working on our oruga hambriente.

Math: We did a shape hunt in news paper articles and collected our findings on posters. 

ELA: We reviewed our letters and sight words. 

Social: We started our "About my City" Posters today. We got to put up our "Crazy Hat Day" posters around the school.

Weekly learning Journey: Dec 5th -9th

Hola hola! Below is our weekly learning journey. 

Spanish:
-We have been reviewing the silabas in Spanish books with beginning sounds M, P, L, S, T, R, D, C

-We started creating our "Oruga Hambriente" (Hungry Caterpillar) 

Math: 
-We've been playing SPLAT to practice subitizing 
-We've started learning about shapes

English:
-We finished learning our letters and sounds. Below is a picture of all the sounds. 
-We practiced how to stretch a sentence using: Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

Science:
-We have been discussing seasonal changes 

Social studies:
-We have started our presentations on "About My School"

Note: 
We have started reading buddies with the grade 3s this week. We got to share our "Mochilas" with them to practice our Spanish and then they read a book with us.

Parent updates

December 9 will be Anything but a Backpack Day. This is a chance for the students to use their creativity by using a household item in lieu of a backpack. We want to emphasize that student should not need to buy anything for this spirit day and what is brought to school is safe for the student and those around them.

 

This year Dalhousie School has decided to give back to the community by participating in the Salvation Army Toy Angel Drive. This toy drive is designed to bring cheer to low-income families with children aged 0-12. A box has been set up in the main office to collect donations. If you would like to contribute please bring your unwrapped toys into the office before noon on 15 December 2022.

 

We are in the last month before Winter Break.  A reminder that if your child will be absent for 5 days or more due to a holiday, an extended absence form must be filled out.  Please email dalhousie@cbe.ab.ca to request the form and have it submitted before your child’s absence.
